The Houses of Healing

When the black breath blows
And death’s shadow grows
And all lights pass,
Come athelas! Come athelas!
Life to the dying
In the king’s hand lying!

“Lean on me Merry lad!” said Pippin. “Come now! Foot by foot. It’s not far.”
“Are you going to bury me?” said Merry.
“No, indeed!” said Pippin, trying to sound cheerful, though his heart was wrung with fear and pity. “No, we are going to the Houses of Healing.”
~Chapter VIII~ROTK~

On the sixth level beside the gate sits several stately houses bound together in unity. Together they form the Houses of Healing where only the gravely hurt or sick are tended. Here you will find the Warden of the House and Ioreth, wise woman of healing. You may catch a glimpse of them and other healers moving from room to room tending to the needs of their patients.

Outside in a small courtyard you will see many paths that wind among many gardens full of healing herbs and trees surrounded by lawns.  Patients are allowed to walk among them and take delight in their beauty and sweet fragrances.

As you walk inside the main entrance you will see a small room where the Houses Receptionist, Dolly, will greet you and see that you are tended to in a timely manner.

The healer on duty is Miah and is well learned in medicine. She offers her services alongside Ioreth and

Doors of Comfort

Standing straight, staring up at the front doors Eridor read the sign of the houses of healing. Running his hand underneath his shirt feeling the scar along his hip that ran up to the bottom of his ribs. He could remember that day like it was yesterday, his first visit to the houses of healing and he was barely alive. He smiled at the thought of it knowing that without the help of the healers he would have surely died. He knew his age was against him at the time, he was young and stubborn. Stifling a laugh he grinned at the thought that nearly a decade later he still was just as stubborn.

Lowering the side of his shirt Eridor finally stepped forward passing through the large doors that lead into the houses of healing. He admired the artwork, the texture of the building as he strode along the hallway leading to the front lobby area. The place was very quiet, although it was early morn and as far as he knew nothing major had happened in the last week. Though of course he passed through safer routes than many of the patients that the houses would often see. Eridor long had wished to return to Minas Tirith, especially to visit everyone in the houses of healing, but his job as a ranger kept him from being able to for so long.

As he rounded the corner he came into sight with the front lobby. There were a few patients scattered amongst the seats provided for them waiting for a healer to tend to their issue at hand. He had no issue that he sought attention for although he did come to see some old friends. He never thought about whether they would have time to see him or not though. What if they do not even remember me? He thought to himself for a moment. Stepping in front of the desk he shook his head for a quick moment, wiping that thought away and focusing on the woman who was sitting in front of him. He waited for her to address him and finally he slowly removed his hood smiling. Any time for an old ranger to have a routine checkup done? he smiled watching the woman, waiting for a response.

In all the years Dolly worked at the Houses of Healing she had never seen so many patients so early in the morning. It was as if they all got together and planned it that way. Her wrist was now aching from all the scribing she had to do to record their information. She drew a heavy sigh and hunched her slender shoulders over her desk, scribbling words that only a trained professional could read. With pursed lips and a determined look in her eye she worked quickly, for there was nothing more irritating than a roomful of patients staring at you and asking repeatedly, "How much longer?"

Dolly dipped her quill in the ink well one last time as she was nearing the end of her task when a shadowy figure loomed over her from above.
"Any time for an old ranger to have a routine checkup done?"

Without taking her eyes off her most urgent task (well, most urgent in her eyes), Dolly held up her hand to still the voice as her feathered pen flopped furiously on the parchment below. "I'll be with you in a moment sir, please take a seat with the others and I'll get..." She glanced up. Her eyes met with his and she glanced back down continuing her scribbling.  ".... your particulars." And then a thought came to her mind and she paused once more. Again she looked up at him and something familiar about him struck her. Was it his hair? Was it his voice? Her expression changed to a thoughtful one and she tipped her head slightly to one side. Her long soft blonde hair spread over her shoulder as her blue eyes searched his. "Something tells me you have been here before."

In his office, the Warden, as he was known to everyone, surveyed over the latest application he just received.

"Dagrun, gardener and herbalist. Well we certainly need one of those!" he exclaimed, glancing over to Ioreth, wise woman of all matters dealing with healing. He looked back to the application and read further. "Likes herbs/Viking First Aid/ Can stomach a lot of blood and gory skin diseases. Specializes in weapon wounds and skin diseases. Hobbies are.....Vikings." His eyebrows furrowed as he pulled the paper up closer to his face to be sure he read that right. "Vikings?" He glanced over at Ioreth with a puzzled look on his face. "Could this be another name for the people of Rohan?"

For probably the first time in her life Ioreth had no clue. "I have no idea sire. ..."

"Where is she then?" he asked, placing the application down on his desk. "find her and tell her to come and see me."

A sharp grin grew on Eridor's face as he listened to what the woman had to say as she worked through her papers so that all the patients would be satisfied. He didn't understand how she could deal with something of such magnitude, he had commanded and dealt with large groups of people before, but that was mostly battle. He relished the thought that she was capable of dealing with grumpy, sick and injured patients that were always nagging at her, asking when they would be dealt with. Laughing at the thought he believed that her job was the real battle and his job was just a child's game, with some bad consequences here and there.

"Something tells me you have been here before." He went over the words a few times in his head as he answered her back, being very polite about it. "You could say that. Nasty thing wargs are, wouldn't you say so? You know, they like to stalk their prey and wait till the perfect moment and pounce on you, leaving you utterly helpless." He smiled once more looking at the beautiful woman wondering if she would remember him after that little fact. He knew she saw hundreds, maybe thousands of people every season. After all he wasn't anyone of great importance, just a ranger.

Dagrun entered the room smiling in welcome. She knew she would be a surprise. You called for me I believe? Lady Ioreth told me you wish to talk to me? Please feel free to call me by my true blood name of Keran.
Please ask me what you will and I will reply honestly.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Keran Tylar. My mother was Ursula Tylar, light Elve, from the Tylar  Clan. But ofcourse, you will know that is the name of the Healing clan.

Before I was born my Healer mother was banished, cursed by her lord after being misused by him. She was sent by his curse to land of Rohirrim. From there she was sent by the curse to a land called Rus where I was born. They named me Dagrun.
Sold into Slavery, my mother swore to me that she and I would return to our true land and I could fulfill my task of healing. She smuggled us out one dark night when I was very young and we made our way back as far as we could.
Fighting against the curse my mother gradually weakened. She eventually secumbed to the curse as we set foot back upon this land in my twentieth year. I had sworn to her as she lay dying that I would carry on the healing tradition of the Tylar clan. I found work as a Healer to Gandalf.
All through my ever moving life I have learnt much from whatever lives we have taken refuge from or ran from. Though I know herbs and spices, I specialise in a potion that aids sleep. It is made from poppy seeds and I have a large supply with me. It aids those in pain and those who need sleep.

"introduced myself as I had to go and sleep! It was that or fall asleep at the computer!"

"So I have heard." replied Dolly, still trying to find some semblance of who he really was. Indeed, many men have passed through the House doors and try as she might she just could not remember every one. However, this one seemed more familiar to her.

"Well then, if you have indeed been here before you should be in our records, aye?" she asked, hoping that this question would put to rest her curiosity.
"What is your name sir?"

He smiled brightly holding back a bit of a laugh as he watched the woman shuffle some papers around, waiting for his name. "Eridor, son of Berethor." He voiced to her as he untangled his bow and pack from one another. "It has been sometime since I have been to the White City so I only saw it fit to return and pay a visit to the people that saved me several years ago." Not thinking about it until he mentioned it being several years, Eridor finally realized that a big reason why he would seem so much more of  a stranger to these healers is because he looked entirely different. His hair was longer and more coarse, he had a beard and his armor was slightly different. He had made and acquired new armor now which made him look much more rugged and woodsman-like. He didn't care anymore of his appearance, he cared to survive, to fight and defend the peoples of middle earth.

Awaiting Dolly's response to his given name, Eridor pondered over how much time he had to spend doing things of his own choosing, before his duties called upon him once more. "So tell me Dolly, what has a pretty young gal like you been up to these past few years?"

The Warden listened with interest at the story being told by his latest healer applicant, Keran Tylar. It was particularly interesting to learn of an old curse that was put upon her family. Of course He knew very little of these things and decided to wait until she was finished before inquiring about it further. However, for now, he was so in need of another healer that he could careless if she was cursed or not. When she was done speaking he slowly moved forward in his chair and taking her application in hand set it down in front of him and glanced up.
“Well, lady Keran.” He started. “Despite your hardships prior to coming to this great City, I hope you will find that living here will be a comfort for you. In fact, I think this place is just what you need to carry out the oath you made to your mother. Within these walls you will find peace, and tranquillity. You will be safe here. No one can hurt you while you are here for we have very good security around the premises.”

The Warden then rose from his chair and walked over to a nearby window and looked out. Below was a beautiful courtyard with walkways among many garden beds filled with scented flowers and fresh herbs. He glanced back at Keran and motioned for her to come and see. “You see down there is the Houses’ largest courtyards. There are five in all but this one is the largest and requires the most attention for there are herbs growing there that are very difficult to find around here.” He turned and looked at her. “I appreciate the fact that you are well adept at making your own potions. We have a great need for that service as well. However, my biggest concern is the tending of these gardens.” Again he looked out the window and to the courtyard below. The flowers growing there were in full bloom and giving off pleasant scents that were all familiar to him.

“Since yesterday, I have had no gardener. The last one retired and I need a replacement as soon as possible.” He turned to her. “So? What say you lady Keran? Would tending gardens be an interest to you? You will have full access to all the herbs you need to make your tonic. Spices are plentiful in our cupboards as well.”

Good Warden, I am honoured and I would be prepared to tend the plants as I would the potions to aid your Healing! Keran made a graceful bow. "I am also prepared to share the potions and lotions that I have the powers of. I think we may indeed aid each other well. Allow me to put my things safe by and I shall begin immediately.

Upon hearing his name Dolly suddenly felt very foolish. Of course she knew this man! "Why of course! Eridor! It IS really you!" she exclaimed nearly jumping out of her seat. She smiled broadly, seeing now clearly through his rugged appearance at the man she met a few years ago that nearly gave her the fright of her life! Reaching over her desk she offered him her hand.

"My dear friend. Oh! how could I ever forget you?! Oh I can't wait to see Marcie's face when she finds out that you are here! She will be so happy! We all missed you." Dolly blushed and looked up grinning at Eridor's last words and giggled. "What have I been doing? Why, just working here and seeing everyone into the waiting rooms." At this a thought occured to her and she glanced around the room to make sure no one was listening. She then waved Eridor to come closer and explained, "I'll sneak you in if you make it look like an emergency. If I let you go in first those people over there will start revolting!" she whispered urgently and pointing discreetly in the direction of the waiting room.

Listening to her words Eridor laughed quietly as she questioned at how she could forget him. "Well, you do see plenty of customers, and I am much more rugged looking than before. I never had a beard, or long hair for starters." He added smiling at her as she answered his second question. Afterward she waved for him to come closer as she explained she probably could get him in so long as he played with her a bit to make it look as though he needed attention. Shaking his head in amusement he finally nodded thinking of something he could do.

Looking at Dolly he smiled before letting his body go loose and thumping to the floor as if he had fainted. He figured that it would be enough to at least get him out of the lobby and into another room. By then he could make his own way through the houses to meet some old friends.

Verdalygwen entered the Garden and looked at the plants. A tiny part of her quailed as the sight of the garden. Close to was worse than from above! So many weeds, yet so many intesting and useful weeds! She smiled at a young woman who came and offered her the use of a hidden shed. "Thankyou! It shall be my place of peace!"
When she was alone Verdalygwen opened her script, took out a large bag of seeds and stashed it on a large hook that she hung from a rafter. That would keep them free of twiching whiskers! Taking the hoe from where it stood by the door she returned to the garden.
During what appeared to be a girlish whirl of delight she glanced up at the windows from where the Warden's office gave such clear views. No one stood at the windows but that was a trick all could play! A further swift glance around the quiet courtyard told her there were folk about. She spent some time taking up the useful herbs and weeds, stowing them away as benefited thier powers and then after, another more careful look, Verdalygwen held her hands high, muttered something under her breath of which could only be heard " as the Warden would care for it so!" and when she lowered her hands the garden was pristine.
The earth was newly turned, dark and smelt fresh and clean. The plants in bloom were at thier most spectacular and those still growing had taken strength from her blessing and were enjoying the life with no choking weeds. Verdalygwen smiled, and went to fetch the water pot and a small mug. Happily singing a Healing elven-song learnt from her mother, she gently threw refreshing water into the garden.
When she had finished there was an audience of Healers and the walking ailing. They applauded. Not expecting this effect, Verdalygwen curtsied and blushed. A brief  movement in the window above made her wonder if the Warden had seen her singing and the crowd that had gathered. Maybe he had seen her using her gift and she would be in trouble for it! By Gandalf's wise beard!, do not let him have seen me use the magic, she thought.

Dolly could hardly conceal the wide spread grin on her face as Eridor dropped to the floor with a resounding thud. But it was just what she needed to get everyone's attention. Those in the waiting area all turned their heads to see what was going on.

"Oh dear!" she
exclaimed, slapping both her cheeks daintily with her hands and hurrying over to the other side of the counter. She looked down at Eridor and gently nudged his body with her foot to show everyone that he was indeed limp and passed out. She sighed and shook her head in a sympathetic way. "Just in time too. Well you just hang in there ranger and I'll go find someone to help cart you to the back!" She turned to go but then turned back again and pointed at him. "Now don't you go anywhere." As if he would.

Dolly then disappeared through the door leading into the main House leaving Eridor just as he was. In the main hall she found a few strong men and they arrived moments later with a small bed on wheels. They picked the rugged-looking Ranger up and placed him onto the bed and quickly rolled him to the back and into one of the examination rooms. Meanwhile, Dolly went in search of a few healers that she knew Eridor knew well, one of them being his biggest fan....Marcie.

When Marcie heard the news that Eridor had returned and that he was lying in one of the examination rooms she dropped what she was doing and went to him at once. Marcie was a young Gondorian lady with long dark hair and pretty brown eyes. She lived in residence for so long that she nearly forgot what the rest of the City looked like, for her life was completely devoted to caring for others. Ever since meeting the young Ranger from the north she had been smitten by him. But when he was well enough to leave he did and she thought she would never see him again. She remembered how critical he was when he first came to the Houses long ago and how she spent endless days and nights by his bedside mending his wounds.

When she got to his room she stopped short of just walking in to first smooth the wrinkles out of her smock and tidy up her hair, which she thought looked a little wild now after her head cover flew off when she was running down the hall. Nearly out of breath she paused to collect herself so she didn't look like she was in a panic and then casually walked into the room.

There he was just lying on the bed. Her eyes widened at the sight of him and then she could hold back no more. Her concern for him was too much to take and she could not help herself but to rush to his bedside.  Looking down at him with eyes filled with great concern she called to him and put her hand on his shoulder not knowing if he was truly unconscious or not. "Eridor? Eridor? Oh please tell me you are alright. Dolly told me you were here but she said naught of your condition... Eridor?"

With the garden more or less content to work on its own for a while, Verdalygwen gave her small, but well maintained, hut a good checking. Much was discovered and discarded as she cleaned and ferreted out what was hidden under the tables. The previous incumbent had clearly specialised in Flowers! She carefully labelled and tidied the loose packs of seeds and it was then she found there was a large bricked space for a fire on the back wall. It was almost hidden by old sacks and pots. Wasted, but now useful for preparing her  potion brews.
Verdalygwen, wiping the dirt and dust from her hands, surveyed her small empire. She could barely believe the joy she felt at this small power. She would not abuse it.
The wooden shelves were now spotlessly clean, proving they were originally ancient dark wood. The small boxes containing the labelled seeds sat neatly on the top shelf with folded sacks and neatly stacked pots. The middle shelf held her smaller tools and the table below was for her creations. There were small shelves on either side of the door, under the by the entrance. This was where she planned to have her standing bottles; bottles that held the mellowing potions prior to use.
Delving in her script she withdrew several instruments such as knives and several spoons in wood and metal. She ran her hands gently over the items as they were placed neatly on the table. How long had she owned these? Hard to remember, but the metal ones had once been her mothers. The only thing left to her by her Mother.
She would ask for a cauldron or cooking pot, whatever they used here, as soon as she could.
Verdalygwen had yet to meet any of the Healers but that would come with time. She liked to know who would be using her creations. And something else, she was hungry, very hungry. Perhaps now was a good time to see where food could be found.

(Verdalygwen had yet to meet any of the Healers but that would come with time. She liked to know who would be using her creations. And something else, she was hungry, very hungry. Perhaps now was a good time to see where food could be found.)

Tying her script back around her lithe waist she turned. "Hello! Again!" At the door stood the young girl, child maybe, who had told her of this hut. The child smiled but said nothing. "I know you can speak so tell me, what is your name, small one?" she asked with a smile that was reminiscent of her Mother.
"Sylleth"
"A pretty name! Who was your mother?"
"I do not know. I was found here on the steps of the Healing Houses!" yet she seemed quite happy about it.
Vedalygwen smiled despite the ache in her heart "Then it was a good place to be found!" Hmm, a name neither male nor female, a clever way to name a child to ensure no family traces. "Do you know where I can find food?"
"Aye, come down to the kitchens!"
" A good start indeed!" and she laughed. "Come with me. You look half starved!"
"They will not like it!"
"You are with me. They shall have to like it!" they walked together through a thick wooden door an down a small staircase and inot a fair sized hall where there were steaming couldrons and the glorious smell of baking. Soon they had a steaming bowl of soup before each of them and a large loaf to share. "Good?" asked Verdalygwen watching the child eat at the speed of a flying arrow.
"Mmm!"
"They need some better herbs but then, I can see for that! So, Sylleth, what do you do here?"
"I run about and do as bid!"
"Oh, I thought you might work for the Healers!"
"They won't let me near them. I ask too many questions!"
Having just taken a mouthful of soup, Verdalygwen snorted a laugh. "Pardon me! You looked quite hurt! But really, a child should ask pertinent questions. How else is it to learn?
"You are not like the others!"
"Oh?"
"You listen!"
"I try!" Verdalygwen smiled.
"I like flowers and herbs. I like the way they grow and they smell."
"Why did you not ask the last Gardener to have you aid him?"
"He did not like me!"
Aye, for you were a foundling! How strange supposedly 'good folk' were! And had she not had first hand experience of that herself?  "Who has charge of your orders?
"None as I know!"
"Well,Sylleth, I may need you all I can. Aid me for a while and we shall see!" They finished thier soup in companionable silence.

Back in her hut, Verdalygwen gathered up a piece of scrap paper and wrote:

Warden,
Blessings on your health. Today I have received a visit from a child called Sylleth who cliams she was a foundling here. She has no particular claim to Master or Mistress so I ask that I take her on as my assistant. If your answer is favourable I shall take her under my tutor-ship and teach her all I can!
Verdalygwen.

She folded the paper."Sylleth!" smiling at the speed with which the child appeared. "Take this to the Wardens Office would you? Do not read it!"
"I can not read!"
Verdalygwen smiled a rather knowing smile. "Go now!" and she watched the child run off.

"Good Warden, I am honoured and I would be prepared to tend the plants as I would the potions to aid your Healing! Keran made a graceful bow. "I am also prepared to share the potions and lotions that I have the powers of. I think we may indeed aid each other well. Allow me to put my things safe by and I shall begin immediately."

With Keran's acceptance of the position offered to her the Warden gave a small smile and nod to show his appreciation. "Aye, well I think you will fit in just fine." He turned back toward the window facing the courtyard feeling more at ease knowing that the gardens would not fall into ruin for lack of proper attention. He would gladly do the task himself but his hands were already full with more important things. He then continued by saying, "As for your things I will have someone show you to your room. But before we get to that I want you...."  He was saying as he turned around, but to his surprise she was already gone. "Eager one that one. That’s good."

A few moments later Ioreth came to him and the Warden explained that Lady Keran would be taking up residence at the Houses and to prepare a room for her. “And please send a lady to the gardens to show her where the shed is so that she can make her place comfortable there.”

When Ioreth left to see to her duties the Warden turned back to the window and watched Keran already tending the gardens as if she had always been there.

Miah was walking down one of the main halls on her way to the gardens when she happened upon a young girl hurrying along with a note in hand. But the youth disappeared around the corner before she could speak to her so she continued on her way to the gardens. Before she even stepped inside the court she could smell the fresh sweet scent of flowers, herbs, and blossoming fruit trees. It was her favourite place to be when she wasn’t tending to her patients and for a little while she had time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the House’s biggest garden.

Miah followed the path that now led into the court. She walked along reveling in all the vibrant colours of the flowers and the scents they seemed to give off at the slightest touch. After a while she noticed a lady(Keran/Verdalygwen) over by the garden shed and wondered if she was new for Miah did not remember ever having seen her before. Curious to know who she was and if she was suppose to be there, Miah decided to walk over and introduce herself.

“Greetings!” she said with a cheerful smile when she neared Keran/Verdalygwen. “Pleased to meet you. I don’t think we have ever met. I am Miah, one of the healers here.”

Meanwhile, up in his room, the Warden was tending to some other unfinished business when a light knock came upon his door. He glanced up and looking over his spectacles he bid the messenger to come in. Then, to his surprise a young girl appeared and walked up to him and handed him the note. He gave a small smile at the child and then unfurled the note.

Warden
,
Blessings on your health. Today I have received a visit from a child called Sylleth who cliams she was a foundling here. She has no particular claim to Master or Mistress so I ask that I take her on as my assistant. If your answer is favourable I shall take her under my tutor-ship and teach her all I can!
Verdalygwen.

The Warden glanced back at the child waiting opposite his desk and supposed that this was probably the child in question. He regarded her with a searching glance for a short moment, wondering if he had ever known about her or not before he finally spoke. “You are Sylleth are you? Whence are you from child and whence are your mother and father?” He asked, falling short of asking where she was currently residing for somehow he knew what the answer might be. An orphan was his first thought and if so, how was it that he was just finding out about it now? He waited for the little girl to reply.

Sylleth was rather stunned by this man with the spectacles half way down his nose. Why didn't they fall off? Her head tilted to one side as she contemplated this phenominom.  Then the Wardens's question finally sank in.
Oh Warden, I am Sylleth. I was found on the steps of the Healing Houses and have been working in the food hall since then. I do whatever folk want - except the Healers, for they say I ask too many questions! And then I met Keran/Verdalygwen and she showed me lots of things and I took her to find some food and we talked and she said would I like to work with her and I said yes and she said I was to take that note to you!- so I did" Sylleth took a deep breath and grinned at the man.

It wasn't long before the cart was wheeled off through the doors and down the hallway to a room where he could be tended to by one of the healers. Smiling at the trickery that he and Dolly had just committed, his thoughts of it soon came to a halt as he heard a healer enter with a quickened pace. Her words were rushed with worry as she stepped up to the bed to check if the ranger was alright.

Feeling the touch of her hand, the sound of her voice, Eridor knew all too quickly who it was that sought to make him better. Smiling, he quickly replied back to the woman to keep her from such a worry over his planned accident. "The service has quickened in here since my last visit." He laughed now sitting up to turn and look at the woman. "Hello Marcie." Eridor said as he bowed his head for a moment. "It has been a long time, but I see you are still a stunning woman who has much care for her patients. Alas I am not hurt though." He chuckled opening his arms out showing her he was fine. "Dolly and I just played a bit of a fib to get me in here...I know I know..we are naughty!" He finished looking into her brown eyes that he had long remembered. "Enough of my talk, how are you?"

With his hands clasped in front of him on the desk the Warden gave a thoughtful nod upon hearing what the young girl Sylleth had to say. So she was staying in residence. This gave him cause to wonder why Ioreth or Miah had not informed him of this. In his mind he quickly pushed the thought aside. He would find out soon enough who it was that found the youngster and then saw fit to put her to work in the kitchen, and who knows where else without first letting him know about it. To say the least he wasn't ecstatic about the idea, but he would allow this one favour since the youngster had been in residence for quite some time already.

"You know you ought to be in the orphanage, in school with the other children your age." he said, in a slightly sterner voice. He did not want her to think he was a push-over for sweet and innocent eyes. A part of him felt she ought to be sent away where she belonged so that the matter would be settled and he would not have to be responsible for her. He gazed back down at the note and read it again though. After a thinking about it for a moment he leaned back in his chair and looked at the girl.

"Very well." he finally said letting out an audible sigh. "You will be servant and aide to Verdalygwen from this point on. You will mind yourself while you are staying here and stay out of the way when you are told. Do you understand?"

The Warden adjusted his glasses and picked up his quill and quickly began writing a reply to Verdalygwen on the same parchment she sent him.

Verdalygwen,
I will grant thee this wish, however the child must remain with you at all times and not be allowed to run freely as she wishes, nor be "lent" to another healer to run errands. If she becomes a nuisance and I hear of it she will be sent to the orphanage immediately without recourse. I have faith that you will be a fine mentor to her and that in time her help may become invaluable to you. Please keep in mind that her safety and that of my staff and patients are most important."

With Kind Regards,
The Warden

With that done he rolled the paper up and tied a red ribbon around it and handed it to Sylleth. Once more he peered down at her over the rims of his spectacles. "There you go." he said. "You may take this to lady Verdalygwen and begin immediately. You are under her care now and no one else's. Consider yourself fortunate to be the youngest apprentice to ever step foot in these Houses. You may go now." he gave a final nod toward the door and then resumed to the other matters on his desk.

To Marcie's surprise Eridor was neither hurt or unconscious at all. Still she could not hide her happiness at seeing him again.

"Hello Marcie."
Eridor said as he bowed his head for a moment. "It has been a long time, but I see you are still a stunning woman who has much care for her patients. Alas I am not hurt though." He chuckled opening his arms out showing her he was fine. "Dolly and I just played a bit of a fib to get me in here...I know I know..we are naughty!
Enough of my talk, how are you?"

Marcie went a little red in the cheeks. She didn't see herself as 'stunning' but if he did that was all that mattered. "Aye, you are naughty!" she said, trying to hold back a burst of laughter. "How am I? bah! I'm still the same, see?" She stepped back and spread her arms out to show him that she was indeed still the same. "I must confess though, I was terribly worried about you. When Dolly came to me and told me that you were here and in this room, well... naturally...I thought you were ill or worse, hurt like last time! Please don't scare me like that Eridor, my heart can't take it!"

Turning to the counter she picked up a funny looking instrument (like a stethoscope) that was used for listening to one's heart. She thought if she could detain him longer she could find out what he had been up to all this time and find out where he was staying.

"Off with your shirt mister. If you're going to be here I might as well check you over and see how well you have healed." While she was waiting she asked, "I never have had enough of your talk Eridor. Please, won't you tell me where you have been? I can only imagine the kind of adventures you have had."

Smiling as Marcie explained how worried she was that he was hurt or ill, Eridor felt a bit embarrassed about pulling the prank. They had no intention of worrying anyone or anything like that, it was just to get him through the crowd. *I should have just walked through saying it was the Grey Company's business to see a soldier who had information.* He thought to himself stifling a laugh. "Well I do receive many wounds over time due to my job being one where I face danger nearly every other day." Eridor explained to the healer.

A few moments later Marcie picked up one of her tools to check the man over since he was already there. Laughing Eridor sighed as he began to take off his cloak and leather jerkin. "You know how much trouble it is to put all this stuff on don't you?" He mumbled finally pulling the last shirt over his head leaving his chest bare to the warm air. His body was covered in scars both big and small which he had acquired over the years of being a ranger. Leaning one way so that his opposite side was showing more easily, Eridor pointed down at the two scars on each side of his hip and ribs. The scar was from a warg that he had fought long ago, and if it weren't for the healers here he would have surely died.

"See its all nice and healed, same goes for all the other scars I've gotten since I've been absent from here." He laughed with a guilty sigh knowing the woman probably would be worried sick about him now. Upon

Upon checking him over Marcie inquired about all his adventures, what he had been up to since she last saw him. An overwhelming expression came to his face when he thought about it for a moment. "My adventures...I guess you could call them that. Some of them deserve a more notable name like nightmares perhaps. Well It's been years since I was last here and I've been all across Middle Earth from up in the hobbiton area through Rohan and down to here in Gondor. I haven't made my way too much near the eastern lands for I am in need of defending the other parts for now." Sighing heavily as he ended his sentence, he thought about the eastern parts of middle earth. "I fear soon though that my day will come and I will have to journey east to fight the great evil that I've heard rumors about." As Marcie continued her examination Eridor explained of talk that had been passed on throughout the lands of middle earth and other adventures that he had experienced.

"So...am I in need of any surgery?" He joked.

Satisfied that the wounds were indeed healed Marcie stepped back to allow Eridor to redress while he told her about his travels. She could only imagine the horrors of sleeping in the wilds with all those strange and dangerous creatures out there. She shivered to think of herself out there, cold and afraid, and with little knowledge of surviving in the wilderness. But Eridor was a seasoned Ranger and was trained to deal with all kinds of perils. She admired him for that. She was also very impressed with how well he recovered from his injuries the last time she seen him.

"So...am I in need of any surgery?"

Marcie grinned. "Well no, but I can arrange it for you if you like? I know how much you like staying here and all. Perhaps you need something taken out? put back in? or maybe your appendix is bothering you?"

Eridor watched as Marcie smiled at his comment and explained that he need no fixing up, he was quite healthy in fact. He knew this but he was just having a bit of fun with the lovely woman who he had come to love as a dear friend. "Hmmm taken out huh? Well I probably could find someone if your in need of some parts, but mine aren't for sale missy!" He chuckled crossing his arms. "And my appendix is quite alright I'll have you know." He added before throwing his cloak back around him.

The conversation was so nice and relaxed, the two hadn't seen each other in such a long time but it felt as if they were talking just this yesterday. "Perhaps I should let you get to the patients Marcie? I do not want to keep you from helping someone who's life might actually be in danger." Eridor did enjoy seeing Marcie and knew he would be happy to see the others as well, but he was not a selfish person to hold them all to himself. He knew they had duties just as much as he, and he did not want to disturb them. "Actually, now that I think of it Marcie, if you are in need of blood...I haven't succumbed to any severe injuries as of late. I'll give some blood if you need it." He told her as he remembered back when he was in need of blood from his devastating wound. "I owe that much at least."
