Welcome to the Middle Earth Village!

In case you haven't worked it out yet, this is the hub of our Tolkien community forums and the place to come to chat and find out what's going on all over Middle Earth. Smile

So what can you do in here? Well, first and foremost it's a place to socialise OOC all over this gathering place (in character is also OK  if you want and it suits the venue).

What else can you do?
  • We want a 'fan' pub where people can just be themselves (RL themselves Wink) chat and have fun. Any volunteers to help the mods (Miah and Jano) set this area up and help run it?
  • We'd like people to use this forum for their Sign-up and Activity Noticeboard thread and post odd things that don't 'fit' anywhere exactly (like OOC or planning threads) in The Mathoms House sub-forum etc, regardless of where it's playing ~ we've set up 2 sub-forums for this very purpose, so please go there to advertise your RPGs and planning or Q&A threads
  • Here on The Village Green you can also open up your own threads for general chat or even competitions* or inter-kingdom games* etc just so long as it is something to do with Middle Earth.
    * With organised activity threads, please come here to talk about them first before setting up shop (or PM
Miah and Jano) especially if it's your 1st time running that kind of thread, so we can give you a hand and generally make sure there's no other threads like that running already or about to open.
  • Find helpdesks, guides and FAQs on RPGs and thread-running.
We can also use some help with character development and RP tuition - therefore we'll need volunteers to help with this, so don't be shy if you would like to try your hand at this! Smile
  • We'd also like a Newbie thread/area for people new to Tolkien who need guidance on how and where to play - so anyone who's got a good overall understanding of Middle Earth who'd like help out there (and make new friends in the process Wink) please go over to our Middle Earth Mellon thread and help ***? make our newbies feel at home and confident about getting around the threads
  • Things to come...
Village Homes*?/Freelands*?  ~ a place of your own to please yourself and your friends. Use it for small, private RPing or celebrations, your own ME fan-fiction or art - whatever you like.
We will NOT be setting these up during this preview phase, but if you are interested in this option please post your interest in here and we'll set them up when we launch fully!
    * These areas may be used for adult content, but as such we will have to safeguard access for our younger members and exclude them from your Home. For this reason we ask you to declare what you wish to put in your Home at the outset, so permissions may be set in a variety of access choices. These may be altered at any stage if you wish to change the nature of your usage.

The Library of Arda ~ a long term aim and reliant on contributers in all the sub-forums as there will be 'branch libraries' for the Hobbits, Men, Elves, Dwarves and Minions. The Library is a long-term aspiration at this stage whilst the site beds in and our membership grows and stabilises - but if you fancy writing a lore article or a character biography, please let us know and we'll find a place for it to sit and be read whilst we get ourselves organised. Wink
Well - that's it for the Village Green for now. A poll is set up HERE for you to help us other activities that you'd like to see in this Village and a separate poll is HERE on the types of threads you'd like to have out in our atmospheric ME regions and communities

The moderators for this Forum for now are Miah and Jano but this may change after launch and we're looking for more moderators and admin for all the other forums, all over the site, including this and the other multi-fandom RPG mega-forum DreamGalaxies. We will be approaching people to fill any gaps we have, so be aware that if you're showing executive potential you may well  be approached! Tongue

Now get out there and get posting ~ let's get this Village buzzing!

Not really the right place to post this but i'm sure someone will move it if necessary. I'm being dense tonight and can't find a topic I know I've read before so what time are the forums supposed to be at - post LoTR events? Before I go and create too many inconsistencies in a characters history

We're fairly fluid on this, having played 2 Tolkien sites where they were Fourth Age so post war of the ring and also after the 3 elven rings had departed from Middle Earth which of course meant no Elrond or Galadriel or Frodo etc and which made things pretty dire in the Minions department so each 'kingdom' plumped for their own time zone which really got a little tedious having to switch the whole time. On Dreams #1 which was only LotR it was the year 3007 Third age (I think)  but the idea was to RP around the events of the War in various places around the site (so starting in the Shire and then following Frodo's route down to Mordor so you could be a hobbit at Bilbo's party or be in Rivendell for the Council etc)

This is why we're providing places rather than 'kingdoms' (which except for Rohan and in Erebor/Iron Hills they didn't have anyway - but unlike the dwarves we'll not delve too deep... Wink) and not really having any moderation policy for those regional forum as we want to encourage people to be adventurous and not have to play too rigidly to a pre-ordained timescale - so if you want to be an Dwarf, Orc, Man or Elf (or Ent or a Blue Wizard even) you can play in the time and place that suits you rather than feel you have to stick to a certain place - I RP mostly in the Third Age, but have fanfic in Beleriand (so it has to be 1st Age in there) and opened up Travellers Tales threads all over mainstream Middle Earth for a 'road trip' tale with Jano and Glorfindel which was written for a lore type game by the brilliant Casja Arkenstone.

Short story long Embarrassed You don't need to keep to any timeline or even to canon and can be as original as you like so long as it's to the ME theme (if you want interstellar visitors then go to the Galaxies and play as hoopily as you like! Wink). Choose your place, tell us if you want any canon characters in there (taking 1st dibs on anyone you need to push the story) and whether you want to 'cast' in the OOC/Sign up thread or do it freeform on the first come first served system and away you go.

Happy to discuss options in here or on PM and we have RP helpdesks and FAQ's for you in the DreamWorlds Hub if you need some help with setting up shop. For LotR/Hobbit timeframes you'll be safe sticking to the 'community' areas so the first 5 main realms/lands for Hobbits, Elves, Men, Dwarves and 'Servants of the Darkness' and also The Wild Lands which are the 'buffer zones' that don't have a standing population as such . Anything Second or First Age you'll find in the Ancient Realms - like the Kingdom of Arnor or Numenor/Westernesse, or Doriath etc - you can also move forums as well like we're doing with the Long Road West...

Which reminds me I really ought to go and post in there... Embarrassed

It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to include the year or "age" in the OP of some of these threads. In Gondor and Rohan for instance I've always considered them to be pre War of the Ring, so it would make good sense to have it noted somewhere. *nods*

All the main 'race' forums are 3rd Age playable and, like I was saying no official timeline so before after or during the war are all possible. Smile

Like whether you want to play canon characters, the thread runner sets their cast list and the time (if needed) in whatever place seems most appropriate Wink

Burb... a nice thread for some reconnaissance around ME. Quennar is my main character now, but I can always play someone else. Discussion in a pub? Or makeshift RP around battling some Orcs?  Tongue

I have many characters from Gondor here and at the Plaza. I think I even created a few Hobbits. I will have to think about this as I am getting ready for work and either you or I can start a new thread in any of the Kingdoms. Thumbs Up

Tell me more about this character Quennar. What part of ME is he/she from?

Quennar Tarcelmë is the mastersmith I write about since the overhaul in 2009. A long while he was mastersmith in the Tingdain. But since that stopped he wanders more or less through ME, documenting everything he can. He hails originally from Valinor, but sailed over the sea and lived in Beleriand in Ossiriand for a long while and merged with the Nandorin, going to live in the southern mountains of the Ered Luin, which survived unmolested into the third and fourth age. He is married and got two children, both born at the end of the first age.

I have no idea in what year of the third age this form plays.  I guess we can decide that for ourselves.

He seems interesting to be sure Smile but I know little of this kind of lore since it has been so long since I read any of the books. I am currently just starting to re-read LoTR though since I am done with Martin's books. Perhaps we could post something more laid-back say in Hobbiton. I was thinking of maybe a party of great magnificence. a Feast-games-and maybe Gandalf's fireworks? We could play a multitude of characters and interact with ourselves and each other.  Maybe I can even persuade Pele to join us since I do interact with her on FB from time to time.

Yes, sounds good. I got a Hobbit lass by the name of Nora Shortbranch. Perhaps there are others to join as well. Would be good to see Pele again. Approve
