I am looking for beta-readers for my epic poem, The Rogue's Odyssey. Jano has edited it twice and I am looking for where to take it next. Looking to submit it to Dreamless Roads.

It already has a page if you want to look at it louisefindlaybooks.wordpress.com/the-rogues-odyssey

There is also a discussion about a book cover https://www.linkedin.com/groups/Picture-Medieval-Bandit-Cover

(Story Updated as of 14/08/14)

It was the dead of night, on horseback I fled,
fled from the knights of the realm.
Their intent, to flay me alive,
was keeping me going, keeping me going.
A rogue I was, honourable though,
but they were scarce in supply.
They hit me, dead, dying, I fled,
traversing through the wood.
I had to survive, survive I did,
through the snowy wood.
I stopped for a second, to revel,
in its wonderous beauty,
but I had to keeping going, had to keep going.

This journey I had to make,
the dangers worth the rewards.
The money was good, oh the pay was great,
A wizard was paying me.
There was a more, primal reason,
a directive I had to follow.
The fate of the kingdom, rested in me, rested in me,
despite the knights following.

The knights,
corrupt they were,
twisted by the darkness.
Their lord,
dark at heart,
instigated the curse.

Lord Caelin,
determined,
determined to kill me.
Murder,
my only option.
Now they follow me.

An orb I had,
vital it was, vital to the kingdom.
It's origins, questionable at best,
received through magical means.

The orb,
a vessel,
vessel to the light.

There was a wizard,
a mage, a warlock,
that helped me on this quest.
He had a pointed beard and hat,
and of course, a magic wand.
He aided me, many a time,
with offerings of food and water.

I was still alive, and kept going,
halfway there I was sure.
Across the sea, across the land,
everywhere I had been.
The orb channeling, absorbing power,
power to aid in my quest.

There was a set of clues,
riddles in fact, riddle to help guide me.
The orb will save thy kingdom.
Channelest with power,
unleashed upon thy world,
to purge and cleanse the darkness.

That was all, the prophecy gave,
but the seers and wizards divined,
and found out more,
the identity of the saviour.
The saviour was a bandit,
but his honour, was full true.
He would travel on horseback, throughout,
the kingdom he wished to save.

Was that all, they found out?
No, it was not indeed.
The orb is to be laid, with the upmost care,
in the shrine of Luminos Dasos,
in the temple of Luna Moon.

The location, hidden though,
was guarded by a secret,
the guardian of the temple.
The guardian, dragon-kind,
a fiercesome foe indeed.
It's fire, red, burning hot,
destroying all in sight.
My knife, short,
hard to use, hard to slay this beast.

Its scaly hide,
its piercing glare,
a foe had to slay.
Its bane,
gone,
lost to time,
how to slay this beast?

Blistering burns,
the air scorched,
a fiery beast indeed.
No water in sight,
to quench,
the flames of my dragon foe.

I managed to jump,
dodging flames,
to climb upon this beast.
Knife in hand,
I struck,
through scales and flesh alike.

Slay it I did, but trouble I had,
grievous wounds I took,
though survive I did.

The orb I placed, filled with power,
in the shrine of Luminos Dasos,
in the temple of Luna Moon.

A bright light emerged, blinding me,
that saved the whole kingdom.
The light energy,
vanquished,
the darkness of the kingdom.
Me, the thief, heralded as a hero.

Hi Louise - I've asked Saranna to call in here soon to give you some 'fresh eyes' feedback on the actual poem.

With regard to your cover I thought I'd reply to you in here rather than on your blog or LinkedIn. For the anthology we're not planning on any illustration for the interior and will probably come up with something for the cover inhouse either using some of my backstock artwork, or perhaps working with some graphic artist contacts, depending on how it pans out and whether we have enough pennies in the coffer to spend on something decent. As a contributor you can join in that discussion when we get to the proofing stage, especially if we're going the down a collage route using elements from several stories. Smile

For your purposes if you're going to put The Rogue on your blog and Smashwords etc then it's worth developing your current image as displayed along the lines that Greg has said or investigate other free image sites so you can get things looking more 'finished' and slicker. If you're intending to ultimately put this on a commercial site then I would recommend you follow up on Aron's post and get something that'll look a lot more professional and attractive. Alternatively we do have some good experienced graphic artists on here as well who might be interested in working with you on an illustration/cover without charge and come up with something that matches the tone of the poem more? Smile

A good experienced graphic artist for free would be brilliant. I am struggling to find good free stock images that match my poem and I am hopeless at art. The 3d cover (changed it to 2d) doesn't really match the poem I think.

I am planning on putting Rogue's Odyssey on Smashwords so that's why I made a cover.

Will (when I get round to it) update my poem with my more detailed ideas (the ones I emailed you a while back.)

Thanks for everything.

Thumbs Up Our pleasure - I will be posting as well as emailing around to people involved in the anthology this weekend about editorials and ongoing submissions, so I'll also mention you're looking for artwork with that Wink

I forgot yesterday that Saranna is off on her travels for the next 10 days or so but she'll look in here when she's back in June.

Will post again + edit the post when I edit my poem using my notes that I emailed. Bit busy in June as I have computer coding events the first 2 Saturdays and a music exam on the last Saturday but I'll definitely look at it.

P.S Is there any way to get email notifications when there's a new post in a thread?

Thumbs Up - and Embarrassed re the email notifies. They're possible but because we're so tiny and mostly communicate off site as well we've never really gone into setting it up (it might mean we have to upgrade as well which will be a little fraught). It'll probably make it onto the 'to do' list once my schedule clears when we get to the Autumn. Smile

I like the second one better, I think - it gives more of an impression of someone on a journey, which suits the title.

Though one person who commented thought the first was better. I still like the second one better. The person looks like he is walking through a wood and there is woods in the poem.

I have finally got a cover for The Rogue's Odyssey, courtesy of Kathryn Jenkins.

Jano edit - just resized the image slightly so most people can see it without having to scroll down Wink
