Suzette Haden Elgin
began writing science fiction novels to pay her PhD tuition. She achieved the distinction of being the only student ever to write two dissertations (one on English, one on Navajo) for that purpose; she retired in 1980 to the Arkansas Ozarks. Her Native Tongue series was a scientific experiment with a ten-year term, and it involved the construction of the language called Láadan.
As well as many other novels and some short fiction, Suzette is also a poet.

As of 2010, Ursula K. Le Guin has published twenty-one novels, eleven volumes of

To be sure, it is poetry (we'll leave that definition to you), but it's poetry with some element of speculation - usually science fiction, fantasy, or horror. Some folks include surrealism, some straight science. One thing is certain - SFPAns know sf poetry when they see it.
